SIAM WINERY LAUNCHES THEIR MONSOON VALLEY WINES
AT THE ROYAL THAI EMBASSY IN LONDON
For Immediate Release.
31th October 2003, London – Last night Siam Winery launched their Monsoon Valley Wines at the Royal Thai
Embassy, during an evening hosted by His Excellency Vikrom Koompirochana, the Royal Ambassador of Thailand.
Attending the launch were many leading UK Thai restaurant owners and businessmen. Also there lending his support
to the wines was famous Thai Food Critic M Thannatsri, who flew in especially for the evening from Bangkok.
Monsoon Valley is Siam Winery’s new wine that has been blended to complement Thai cuisine. Siam Winery believe
the opportunity for a Thai wine for Thai restaurants is huge in the UK. “With over 1,000 restaurants, and the popularity
of Thai food at an all time high, we believe that the time is right to launch Monsoon Valley in the UK. Our goal is
simple - to be the premium house wine in all Thai restaurants ”, said Stephen Loftus, Siam Winery’s European
Marketing and Sales Director. To achieve this Siam Winery are working closely with a Thai owned
distributor, Skymarket, a key player in supplying the Thai restaurant trade
The story behind Siam Winery is truly unique. Siam Winery was founded by Khun Chalerm Yoovidhya in 1986,
following the success of his company’s Red Bull energy drink. The vision of the business was to make a quality Thai
wine that is the perfect complement to Thai cuisine - creating an industry that will benefit Thai both at home and
abroad. The rapid growth of their Spy Wine Cooler product in the 1990s created a state-of the-art winery, and a skilled
wine-making team. Led by French winemaker Laurent Metge-Toppin, they have now created unique
wines from local Thai grapes (such as Pok Dum) grown on the amazing ‘floating vineyards’ of the
Chao Phraya Delta, 40 miles south west of Bangkok. There are two harvests a year, picked at night by boat.
Most importantly, these wines have been created to complement the complex flavours of Thai food – the balance of
spice, salty, sweet and sour dishes that is central to the Thai food culture.
The wines have now won awards in London, Lisbon and Bangkok, and are getting growing support from Thai chefs,
such as celebrity Chef ‘McDang’:
“Siam Winery has created wines to perfectly complement our famous cuisine. I am now proud that we Thais can now
offer both food and wine at the international table”
Siam Winery already employs over 1,000 people in Thailand, and sells their wines in more than 10 countries. With their
new Monsoon Valley wines, they believe they can lead the development of an exciting wine industry in Thailand,
producing wines that are unique and that go hand in hand with Thai food. And above all, are 100% Thai.
