WINE = FERMENTED GRAPE JUICE

Do ferment anything you can possibly find that contains sugar (potatoes, oignons, coca cola etc.) but please dont call it wine, try call it beer to see what happens.

I'm inclined to agree, Francois, but on a recent hike of Cornwall's Coast Path (everyone--go! right away!) I passed in many a town sunny storefront windows in which were baking large displays of parsnip wine--and usually one or two other vegetable wines. I never tasted any; I considered them valuable for causing an involuntary increase in my pace. Anyone here tasted them?

Also, in the US we have a ong and appalling tradition of elderberry wine and dandelion wine. It's probably a whole lot easier to distill such stuff into vodka.

In the UK such fruit wines fall under the 'country' wine label - have a look at
callowhillcountrywine.co.uk
for example

Have tried this at a "Chilli Fair" last summer. Not my taste I'm afraid, I found it absolutely vile.

You can't beat a fine glass of wine and a beautiful sunset.

no its not an euphemism for a fawlty wine. i was just thinking that there is a hot chilli wine to drink and to use in cooking made here in australia so why not try something like basil to use for the samething.

couldnt you just infuse crushed basil leaves in some wine as you would in olive oil. it would oxidise after awhile though. if used in cooking why combine them before - why not add as seperate ingredients during cooking?

Chilli wine sounds vile ...

reminds me of a story ... the Malt Whisky Society in Edinburgh was recently selling off some Spiced Whisky sauce. It originated as an experiment in maturing whisky in a variety of different barrels - it's already common to 'finish' whisky in old sherry, madeira, even port barrels. Some bright spark thought you could try it with old Tabasco barrels - where they steep the chillis to make the sauce.
It proved to be a barrel too far ... utterly undrinkable, but just about acceptable poured over a steak in small quantities for cooking.
I have a feeling that Chiili wine might be the same.

No Love Here!!!!

1. I have not heard of chili wine but I have personally made Garlic Wine. These strong flavor wines are intended for cooking not drinking but they do add great flavor to a steak or salad dressing.
2. Beer is made from all types of grain. Why can’t wine be made from all types of fruit? I will admit dandelion is a stretch but I greatly enjoy elderberry wine and in my opinion blueberry is a close second.
