Compounds in Red Wine Reduce Kidney Stone And Stroke Risk

Article by Daniel Manu on November - 29 - 2011

Wine is full of dozens of compounds that have beneficial effects on the human body. Today there are many known advantages to drinking red wine on a daily basis. Such as reduced heart attack and blood clotting risk, increase bone mineral density, preventing osteoporosis and many more.

Stop the spread of arterial muscle cells with red wine

Red Wine Health BenefitsOne of the more interesting benefits how alcohol positively affects arterial muscles. Alcohol, when consumed during or around mealtime reduces the spreading of smooth muscle cells within arteries. Smooth muscle cells are among the key components in developing atherosclerosis which is one of the leading causes of heart attacks.

The idea is that ingesting alcohol in moderate quantities (two glasses of wine or three beers) reduces the reproduction of arterial muscle cells by 20% even when one eats a high-fat meal. Studies suggest other ways for this to happen. Supposedly phenolic wine components counter fatty foods during the critical digestion phase.

Wine helps men and women reduce kidney stone risk

A Harvard study lead by Gary Curhan was conducted using over 80 thousand women volunteers. They were given one of 17 beverages in order to see if an increase in fluid consumption would influence the risk for kidney stones.

The results suggest that wine has the greatest benefit compared to all the other beverages. Those included tea, coffee, milk and water and so on, however wine was told to give the highest risk reduction of 59%. A similar study was conducted in 1996 but for men. And the results suggest that wine has a risk reduction of 39%.

Drinking wine in moderation reduces stroke risk

Wine has protective compounds that effectively reduce stroke risk. However other alcoholic beverages, such as beer and spirits, have no such benefit. Because this effect is not granted by alcohol, but by other compounds found in wine.

Still, one should not understand that they should drink wine in order to reduce strokes. Excessive drinking can just as easily turn into a harmful effect and can raise the likelihood of strokes as well as heart attacks and other cardiovascular diseases. So long as wine intake is limited to a maximum of two glasses per day the benefits will apply.

Wine is believed to reduce mortality rates

Red Wine HealthResearchers report that not only does wine reduce mortality risk by reducing heart disease risks but moderate wine drinkers, compared to heavy drinkers and abstainers appear to have lower risks for all causes of death.

These also include cancer as well as other chronic diseases. Similar findings have persuaded the American Heart Association to announce that “The lowest mortality occurs in those who consume one or two drinks per day.”

A British Physician’s Study concluded that middle to old age male doctors who took one or two drinks of wine, beer or spirits per day had a death rate by at least 1/6th lower than that of abstainers.

This goes to show just how beneficial wine can be for the body. Resveratrol, phenols and alcohol can all provide various health benefits to moderate wine drinkers. While some of those advantages are shared by beer and spirits, wine has many more variants and better results overall.
